My Featured Lovely for September is Tabby from Shipwrecked on a Fabulous Island! Please go check her blog out, she has so many awesome DIY party tips, and she is also being very genous today, with a wonderful giveaway of 3 awesome prizes, 1 winner will take all!
1. When and why did you start blogging?
I've been stranded on the island since December 15, 2010 and it all started with Facebook. I posted pictures of my family events and people started asking me how I created things. These questions lead to my family craft facebook album created specifically to house pictures of our little projects. I started getting daily messages requesting more detailed step-by-steps so, almost by natural progression, I created a blog to document my family's recipes, crafts, events, tips, tricks and stumbles along our parenting way.
2. Being a party planner, what was your best and biggest event?
My company's primary clients have been brides. My largest event was a Hindu wedding. It was comprised of several smaller ceremonies the week before the actual wedding. Henna, elephants, a rich color palette, amazing jewelry, fashion and let's not forget the groom's arrival on a white horse... The food was amazing, the clothing was amazing, the people were amazing - it was a great day and it certainly isn't often that you have to include live animals in the logistics, lol. My best event? Hmm... It would have to be my daughter's first birthday. It was hosted immediately following her Christening and it was all about celebrating our first year as parents and our sweet baby girl. My focus was on my baby girl so I was able to enjoy every moment... It was the kind of party where you remember the good food, good friends and good fun without worrying about the other junk that doesn't matter (but stresses me out sometimes, lol).
3. What is one of your favorite recipes that you have prepared for an event?
When I cook for crowds I prefer to remix the classic party food. My favorite pot luck dish is a pasta salad. It so easy, requires 1 big bowl (less dishes to wash? I'm all in!)and is practically fail-proof! Bow tie pasta, cherry tomatoes, fresh spinach, Italian blend cheese, Zesty Italian dressing (with optional onions and cilantro) and it is a GUARANTEED crowd-pleaser. Sometimes I add grilled chicken or shrimp to change it up a bit. So yummy!
4. How did you come up with your blog name?
When I first started blogging, I felt like every other blog had an established identity and their name reflected it. I couldn't create my blog until I had the name that fit me. I drafted a list of few names that reflected my love affair with glue but none seemed right. I was drawn to redefining fabulous... My life revolves around my family and if that means mommy compromises and runs around with my hair in a crusty bun so my family can have a house that looks, smells and feels like a home, then I must re-define FABULOUS to fit my needs. I have a thing for anchors, my family is from the West Indies and it just came together... Fabulous no longer means having the latest purse or shoe to match my outfit then rushing home to a place that looks like a dorm room. FABULOUS means improving my quality of life by taking time to invest in my surroundings. Home is where the heart is and I care enough about my heart to make it a place I enjoy.
5. When you're not blogging what do you do?
When I'm not blogging, Monday - Friday, I work a 9-5, I conduct wedding rehearsals on Fridays, I coordinate weddings on Saturdays, I lead the music ministry at my church, teach Sunday school and meet clients most Sundays... Other than that, I cook for my family everyday, I sit still long enough for my daughter to create portraits of me, I cuddle up with my husband when he's not playing video games (or trying to hide my honey-do list), I search sales racks, I obsess over Bath&Body Works soaps, I sing out loud, I fuss at people who walk on carpet I just vacuumed (don't judge), I enjoy laughing
until I pee a little, I catch myself watching Disney when my kid's gone to bed... I'm a nurse, a chef, a super hero, a DJ, a chauffeur, a maid, a dentist, a masseuse, a lawyer, a goddess. A mom.
